Summer Blog Party! #Twitter-edition

A Little Birdie Told Me

I admit that I am most creative when I am dealing with insomnia, and last night was one of those nights. For once, I actually remembered my idea and came up with this gem!💎 I am extremely overtired right now, but I will try my best to explain my idea to you. As you may know, I am not active on social media platforms right now. Some people may argue that blogging is a form of social media, so basically I am was only active on WordPress. However, a little birdie told me about the benefits of using Twitter to help increase blog traffic, so I have decided to reopen and update my abandoned Twitter account, which can be found at @hellokitty8404 💕

*Gasp!* Twitter? But why?!? It’s simple. Because I find methods of communication quite limited on WP and email often dwindles after a few exchanged, heart-to-heart messages. Snail mail is even more unreliable. I sent out mail a few weeks ago and I haven’t heard back from my recipients, so I don’t know if they ever received their mail. That being said, I hope to connect specifically with WP bloggers on Twitter. Blog parties are popular in the WP community, and if you haven’t heard of a blog party, then I’m afraid that you have been living under a rock longer than I have! I was looking for the definition of a blog party, and I found the perfect definition from KaylaAnn’s blog, kaylaannauthor.wordpress.com, where she defines a blog party as:

“Generally speaking, a blog party is an online gathering for bloggers of all kinds to meet and engage with one another.” —KaylaAnn

She goes on to define what blog parties are on Twitter, but that’s where she lost me. My idea is a bit simpler. Anyone who has a Twitter handle (aka. @your.account) could share their handles in the comments section below↓ Currently, I am attempting to follow WP bloggers who also have Twitter accounts, as a way to hopefully improve communication and networking opportunities. However, trying to navigate through each and every one of your blogs is not an easy task or the best use of my time.

maxresdefault

“This will be easy!,” said my illogical, insomniac brain.

I Invite You to Join the Party!

I figured that everyone could benefit from a twitter/blog following networking party by joining the #follow-train (a cringe-worthy hashtag) in the comments section below↓ It’s simple and saves us both time! I will keep the comments section open until next Wednesday, August 5, which happens to be the day after my birthday! 🎉🥳 This gives you a week to join the party if you wish to share your Twitter handle with us bloggers! I promise to follow your Twitter account as long as your account has a) up-to-date tweets from 2020, b) your account isn’t a bot account or full of spam, and c) your account/tweets has some relevance to your blog.

Follow the Steps Below ⬇️

Like. Comment. Engage. Spread the Word.

  • LIKE! You are not obligated to like this blog post, but I appreciate the likes, especially if you would like to see more of these blog posts in the future!
  • COMMENT! Tell us your name, leave a short description telling us what your blog is about, and add your Twitter handle (@your.account) so we can follow you. Please do not skip this step or your comment may end up in my spam folder.
  • ENGAGE: Like KaylaAnn mentioned in her blog post(s), blog parties are not about simply promoting your blog/work, and I completely agree with her statement. There is no party without engagement! I encourage you to visit other blogs and check out their social media accounts too. And follow them if you like their content.
  • SPREAD THE WORD: There is no obligation to re-blog or re-tweet, but I would greatly appreciate it if you did. The more you help spread the message, the more opportunities there will be to meet new bloggers and increase your following as well! ❤

The comments section will remain open from July 28, 2020 – August 5, 2020 at 12 p.m. Mountain Time (MT), so take advantage of this opportunity while you are here, especially if you have a Twitter account. Also, feel free to keep this party going by spreading the word! Remember, our blogs cannot thrive without each other’s support. We are all in this together! ❤

Thanks for stopping by!

That’s a great idea Hilary! I know I put on my blog to follow me on social and I’m the first one that I’m not present there…I wish I could have moooore time 🤪 I don’t remember when was the last time I’ve checked twitter but I have an account…I’ll need to un-dust it 🤪

Hi Ribana! I found you on Twitter so it’s all good. Since my blog posts automatically go to Twitter, I might as well follow bloggers on there. 🤷‍♀️

I wasn’t active on Twitter. That could change though… I’m learning how different things work. It looks like a lot has changed over the years! I feel like I’m learning how to use social media for the first time. Mine too collected a lot unwanted dust, that’s for sure. 😂

Normally I don’t follow blogs with less than 100 followers on WP but it seems like a lot of bloggers have less than 10 WP followers and have successful blogs, which is interesting. I guess they’re leveraging something I’m not?

I’m only using Twitter now for blogging purposes. We shall see how that goes! Tbh social media is a pain and a huge time waster lol

I have read posts from other bloggers saying that some of their numbers may seem high because they had linked their blogs to other forms of social media. In all honesty, I don’t know how that works, I don’t use any other social media.

I do like that there is a very friendly supportive group of bloggers who interact regularly, many of them taking part on similar writing prompts and challenges. I like the spirit amongst them.

It’s a mystery to me as well. I guess they get traffic from elsewhere. Having writing groups/challenge groups can be fun on here. I will occasionally do them – mainly sunshine blogger awards (I keep it limited to one or two types of awards for simplicity) or blog posts that were inspired by other bloggers. It’s always good to give credit to the source or person that sparked the blog post idea! 😄

I will never use Twitter again for as long as I live but acknowledge that it’s useful for spreading the word about yourself. If I ever get around to writing for realsies and start making money, I’ll just hire someone to do my twerts for me. Haha.

That’s not to discourage you from using Twitter. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, objectively, it’s just that my style of writing and the topics I HOPE to write about would likely draw the most toxic elements of the platform (which is actually a viable marketing strategy so we’ll see if I change my mind).

I’ve thought about WordPress and its relationship to social media before; recently actually. I don’t think it counts. While bloggers do express opinions and connect with like-minded individuals, it’s such a different experience to posting on Facebook or Instagram that I don’t think they can be fairly lumped together. On Facebook, even if you write something lengthy, people will just read enough to get the gist and then write their tirade about how you’re wrong, haha. On WordPress people are much more likely to digest the whole post before commenting (well, I suppose that’s mostly false but I don’t respond to people who leave obviously useless comments and they eventually stop coming).

Wow WordPress turned my beautifully formatted comment separated into paragraphs into something that makes me look like I’m hiding in a bunker clutching my toilet paper hoard. Lol

I kind of agree with you there, it’s like with every social media apps it’s a different approach and it’s also kind of showing your different personality. In Facebook & Twitter you have to be funny, in Instagram you have to be creative & flirty with your photos. But with wordpress I think people are their genuine selves. Or something like that, I don’t really know what I’m talking about 🤣

Hi Joana! You raise some good points too. I have accounts on IG and FB but I don’t use them. As for Twitter, I cleaned it up and am very selective about who I follow now. So far it’s been okay because it’s an extension of the bloggers I’m already following on here.

The problem I have with IG is not having the ability to arrange photos in the order I want. I prefer albums, which FB is notorious for, but FB isn’t good for my mental health right now. Twitter is one of the least emotionally charged platform out there imo. My mental health is still quite fragile so I think it’s okay for us to be picky about which platforms we use and who we choose to follow or not follow.

Yes, that makes sense. We control the content we take from social media. It made me think of what this blogger Finding Tom said, that there are bad people out there in social media and it’s our job to steer clear of them. Because right not vlogger/bloggers get more followers by doing pranks and inappropriate things, and people think it’s cool.

My phone died before I had a chance to script a clever reply! That’s totally understandable that you want to avoid Twitter. Tbh I’m only using it now for blogging purposes and to expand connections with bloggers who are on WP. Only being able to leave comments on WP is limited and frustrates me, and emailing bloggers isn’t really cutting it for me. I’ve tried that but it takes forever to get replies or conversations naturally come to a halt via email. That’s a smart move to hire someone else to write your tweets for you 😂 A lot of successful ppl do that, and for a good reason!

Twitter accounts I’m not following are marketing accounts, unless it’s related to someone’s blog. I totally see where you are coming from, as Twitter is much less anonymous than WordPress. Tbh FB and IG are triggering to me so I don’t use them – things that trigger me are personal accounts by ppl I know. Seeing their highlight reels all the time makes me feel like crap 🙇‍♀️ Social
media is known to cause depression and anxiety in people, and I can totally see why. Ppl on FB and IG are not my audience, and luckily I haven’t had many trolls who crap on my blog/profile and leave (aka. Seagulls). My audience are bloggers who write about health and wellness, lifestyle, and mental health. If ppl disagree with my posts, they’re entitled to an opinion, but the vibe is much different on WP than it is on FB and IG (which I’m not active on). I cleaned up my Twitter account so 98% of the people I follow now are also bloggers. The atmosphere is different. If it gets toxic, I will leave. Thank you for your insightful reply. You made me think deeply about this subject, and hopefully I provided adequate rationales. 🙂

No need to rationalize your choices to me! Haha. I totally get the usefulness of Twitter and NORMAL people can totally use it without running afoul of the more toxic side… I just know what kind of person I am and that I’ll eventually get involved in some kind of flame war or something because I can’t keep my mouth shut when I see something that I think is stupid. :O <– that's me unable to close my mouth, not gasping. Wish you could type emoji's on a computer keyboard. Come on, 2020!

I'm perhaps fortunate to only know severely depressed people so their highlight reels all make me feel way better about my life, lmao. Mostly joking but not entirely. I'm also getting to be ancient so a lot of my friends are parents who only talk about their kids on social media. It doesn't even reach far enough into my eyeballs for my brain to register it as a post these days! That's kind of why I prefer WordPress too, people like you and some of the others I follow (and I think we both follow) who actually talk about real things and share opinions that aren't purposefully designed to make people angry.

My comments get squished too but it shows up as paragraphs after refreshing the browser. Your comments show up as paragraphs on my end… it must be a WP glitch because there’s nothing wrong with your formatting from what I can see.

I don’t mind debating! It’s what I do. It also makes me think about things from a different POV. The flame wars were so 2012 for me LOL I used to get in heated arguments on FB. Luckily, on Twitter there is a mute button, an unfollow button, and a block button. I will unfollow ruthlessly if it comes down to that. I owe them nothing. Muah. >:]

Oh yeah debates are fine by me too, it’s just very rarely what online arguments actually are. Lol. Like if you’re not even willing to consider that you might be wrong, it’s not a debate it’s a contest for measuring something that I won’t mention. lol

Thanks for letting me know my comments are formatted correctly. That was causing me an irrational amount of stress. Lol

Usually with online arguments, there’s a lot of swearing and name calling. I can’t take someone seriously if they’re gonna use inflammatory or aggressive speech without having done their research first. I always tell them to directly message me so we can have a mature debate, and that usually scares them off lol I feel like most of them just want attention! 🤷‍♀️

Yeah a lot of people confuse their opinions or the opinions as others as facts lol. One thing I learned in college is any time someone says something you should just automatically understand it’s an opinion even if they don’t say it is.

Hi Hillary! I’d like to join this train and see if it works. I have a twitter account but I rarely use it. I find it doesn’t really help me boost readership to my blog, I’d rather stick to the WP platform and engage with bloggers that way. But then again, I don’t use twitter often so it’s a chicken and egg problem 😅 I’m open to this creative idea though. I’m @happymama_blog on twitter. What’s your handle?

    Liked by 3 people

    • Hilary Tan says:

Hi Krisna! Tbh idk how the twitter RT train works either but I’m trying to learn. I figured a good place to start is to follow bloggers who I already follow here on WP. I know other bloggers who use Twitter to help boost traffic so it’s worth a try! Tbh I’ve only been using the WP platform, and Twitter is completely experimental. Since my blog posts automatically go to Twitter anyways, there’s no loss. I’ve had my account for years but never really used it. I cleaned up a lot of the “dead” accounts I was following before, and am only using it for blogging purposes now. Honestly, you can get a good following just from engaging with the WP community on here without using social media! 😊🤗

Ty, I will follow your twitter account! My twitter handle is @hellokitty8404. Thanks for stopping by! 😊💕

Ya I remember you saying that on your 7 ways to get inspired blog. 😊 I was initially getting pressured to post on Twitter, IG and FB to get more readers but they’re such different platforms from WP. It’s tough to get avid readers from those platforms. But it’s good to experiment once in a while. Following you on Twitter now. Sorry for asking for your handle again, seeing that you already indicated it on the blog. Like most things, I’ll blame it on my mom brain lol

Ooh this is such a fun idea! You already followed me so I’m not going to leave my link but I think this is a great way to network and connect with fellow bloggers. As much as I love WP I agree that the communication is quite limited- I guess that’s what they want- so if you want to have actual conversations with people this may be a good way to do so.

Hi Hilary! This looks like a great idea. I have been looking for ways to connect with people on WordPress but it is hard since there are only comments to go on. Twitter has the opposite problem since it is so vast that you just seem insignificant. 😂
I just opened my twitter account recently but I guess it takes some to to get it going. Here’s my twitter account:

Hi Sagar! Ty for finding my blog post. I feel the exact same way; tbh I felt a bit restricted with being limited to comments on WP. I tried messaging ppl via email but it was frustrating at times. I agree that Twitter is super vast but I guess it’s known spreading messages and updates quickly! 😂 I’m trying to figure out Twitter, as a lot has changed since I last used it. I’m following you on Twitter now! 😊💕

I seem to have hit a plateau on Twitter. Gained an est. 60-70 followers since relaunching my account but that’s where it stopped. Now I have to figure out how to effectively spread mass tweets or write more content for the blog. It forces me to work harder which isn’t a bad thing! 😅

As much as I like Instagram, it’s still emotionally triggering for me 😓 It’s also easy for me to look certain ppl up who have negatively affected my mental health. Everyone I know in person has left Twitter so it’s safer in that regard, plus it’s a boring platform by default 😂 Also, it’s less saturated than IG. In the future, I might actively post on IG again. My IG account is still searchable but it sits dormant at this time (@serene_hilz).

Ty for commenting, Emma! It’s always nice talking to you. 🌺

I get you, I don’t use Facebook because everyone I know is on there I don’t need that pressure in my life. Not every platform is for everyone. For me, I don’t use Twitter because I can’t help but associate it with Twitter drama…also, let’s face it, I did an English degree and write several blogs – expressing a thought in a coherent, short form is not something I’m good at!
But good luck with using Twitter to promote your blog. 60-70 new followers is a good start. I’d offer advice but I’ve never been very good at promoting my own blog and using other platforms to do so.

Hi Emma! I seem to have reached a standstill on Twitter and haven’t gained any new followers this past week. I do think it helps with promoting blog posts, but I haven’t posted new blog posts lately, or have anything new to promote. I realize that I need to write more often! Yes, I totally get that. It is super hard fitting everything into a mere 280 characters per tweet. At least they increased the character count since the last time I used it! 😂😅

Hi Shama! Thank you for taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment. I apologize for my late reply since I haven’t used my laptop in days. I try my best to reply to everyone’s comments, but I sometimes miss a few here and there. 🤭 I agree that Twitter can be quite boring, and luckily, it doesn’t seem to be addictive like other social media platforms. Also, I seem to have reached a roadblock where my follower count has ceased to increase. I will follow you on Twitter; thank you for sharing your handle with me. Also, thank you for your kind words and positive feedback! 😊💕
