Where Did my Name Come From?

Daily writing prompt
Where did your name come from?

What’s Up With Hilary?

Just to clarify, it’s Hilary, not Hillary or —goodness, no—Hillary Clinton, so let’s not go there. I’m more of a Hilary Duff, anyways.

Please note that I’m keeping this blog post about my first name, Hilary, because diving into my middle name—shared with my great aunt, a nurse with a story worth its own novel, would take us on a tangent. Also, my married name, Tan, is super common in Singapore, but my maiden name? It’s practically extinct. I’m the last of my family to carry it, and let’s just say I’m not its biggest fan, but will make light of it with humor, of course.

My name, Hilary, feels like a whisper from the past, carrying a gentle, soft melody that I’ve always found grounding. Derived from the Latin word, Hilarius, meaning “cheerful” or “happy,” it’s a name rooted in joy, which resonates with my quirky, uplifting personality. I’m not just funny—I’m Hilary-ous! I often joke and say that if I could have any job in the world, I would be a comedian.

A Touch of History

Historically, Hilary was a unisex name, used for both men and women, but when I think of it as a male name, I think of the guy who climbed Mt. Everest—Sir Edmund Hillary, I believe. My name might be timeless, but it’s not very popular anymore, especially after Hillary Clinton’s time in the public eye. However, there’s something poetic about carrying a name spoken across centuries, even if it doesn’t hold much significance for me. Honestly, I would’ve been fine with a different name. Then there are people who, as if it’s a groundbreaking idea I’ve never considered, say, “Well, you could use your middle name since you don’t seem to like your first name that much!”

Gee, I never thought of that! Actually, I can’t, because my middle name is worse than my first name!

I often write blog posts about finding peace in the chaos of life, and Hilary feels like a quiet nod to that mission. Its cheerful essence reminds me to seek joy in small moments—whether it’s a quiet morning with my journal or a walk on my favorite trail. My parents chose it because they wanted a name that felt unique yet classic, something that would stand out without being overly trendy. My mom wanted a name that sounded musical, and she preferred a variation of Hillary, which she said she didn’t care for. I often get called nicknames like Hilz, Hilly, Hil, and others that aren’t even close to my name, like Hilla, Hailey, Hannah, and so on. I really don’t mind Hailey. In my opinion, Hailey or Hannah are much better names.

A Personal Connection

Growing up, I didn’t really like my name, Hilary. As a kid, I sometimes wished for something more common, like Jessica, Hailey, or Claire—names that were popular in the 1980s and 1990s. I wanted a common name because I longed to fit in and have a normal childhood. But my childhood was anything but normal. Is wanting a simple, vanilla life too much to ask? 🍦😔

Also, I got tired of correcting the spelling. Everyone, including teachers, would spell it H-I-L-L-A-R-Y. Ugh. Drop the extra L. Over time, I’ve grown to accept my name. I don’t love my name or its associations, but at least it’s distinctive, almost aristocratic. Hilary sounds like a name suited for the social elite. My name has taught me to embrace my differences and quirks. As my mom and Nana would say, my name sounds musical. My name is like a soft melody—unassuming but memorable. I also feel a lunar pull to my name, as if it aligns with the dreamy, introspective energy of Sereneluna (yes, it’s one word, not two!). Here I go again, correcting people on my blog’s spelling, just as I’m constantly correcting the spelling of my name.

Finding Motivation in my Daily Life

Daily writing prompt
What motivates you?

Motivation isn’t some grand, glowing epiphany for me—it’s more like catching flecks of glitter in the wild mess of my life as a 30-something Millennial wife and mom. Glitter and PlayDoh are strictly banned at my house because I have a #destructivetoddler. Motivation, specifically intrinsic (aka. internal) motivation, mostly comes out of nowhere, and it’s often spontaneous and unexpected. Between finding time and energy to write, getting lost in way too many hours on my computer or iPhone, cuddling my cat Timon, chasing after my kids, and chugging orange pekoe tea to stay awake like it’s my full-time job, here’s how I tap into motivation.

“Wherever the music takes you, kitten.” —Sheldon Cooper

Swaying with the Ebb and Flow of Life

I don’t have a clear-set structure or system for finding motivation. More often than not, it’s “wherever the music takes [me].” In other words, it’s like letting the bongo music guide me wherever it wants. I don’t know why, but that scene from The Big Bang Theory always makes me laugh. I thrive on those brief moments that make me feel like I’ve got it together, even if just for a second, and they usually hit when I’m not stuck to a routine or checklist. Instead of following influencers’ advice to make lists and “do this, do that” for motivation, sometimes tossing out the plan and letting the moment guide me, like following a song’s rhythm, pushes me to do something surprising, like dusting off my blog after months of neglect. 🙈

Some might not see it my way, but those little, unexpected moments of randomness are totally a form of motivation for me, grounding me fast when I realize I’m giving my all as a wife and mom. To all the moms out there, #IYKYK.

Personal Growth is a Whole Mood

Working on yourself, whether that’s personal growth and development or another sector of your life, is a vibe of it’s own. I often listen to self-development podcasts or watch youtube videos about psychology, philosphy, etc. to learn more about the world and seek truth about what’s real and what’s not. There’s a lot of distractions these days, and I just want to understand things a little better each day. I like diving into some podcast I didn’t need but couldn’t resist. It keeps my mind happy and stimulated. Blogging on http://www.sereneluna.net, is where I pour out my thoughts and feelings. Every post, even if it resonates with just one reader who vibes with me, keeps me anchored and fuels me to write more. That’s motivation right there.

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ FINAL THOUGHTS ♥

When the house gets quiet and Timon’s purring away without a care in the world, I ask myself: What keeps me going? Easy—I want to grow, keep love at the heart of it all, and make something that lasts, even if it’s making my family happy or publishing a blog post every now and then. Motivation isn’t a destination; it’s so many little things that give me a reason to keep going.

What motivates you? Join the conversation by leaving a comment below ↓ Maybe my blog post will motivate you to write something today. If you do answer the Writing Prompt, please tag me or let me know so I can read it! 🙂 I got the idea to respond to this Writing Prompt after reading Sajida’s response at https://mymindfulnessjourny.wordpress.com.

Why I’m Quitting Duolingo

The thing that kept me going the longest was the daily learning streak, but I am not getting value from the app anymore. This isn’t a formal review of the Duolingo app; these are just my thoughts. I plan on making my account private before deleting the app off my phone and logging out completely. That way, I’m not letting down anyone who was previously completing weekly challenges with me. Some of the contacts I had on Duolingo are also my blogger friends on WordPress. ✌️💕

Duolingo has been a popular language learning app for years, and I finally decided to try it back in December 2022. I even found a way to get it for free, which saved me hundreds of dollars. It offered the features I needed, and although there were a few things I couldn’t unlock with the free version, I had unlimited lives, which meant unlimited hours of learning.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

So what went wrong? Over time, I realized that it was not the best way to learn a new language. I was learning German at the time but eventually started repeating earlier lessons just to keep the daily learning streak going. I liked that the app had a gamified approach to learning, using a streak system and allowing us to win challenges with other Duolingo learners in the community, but it became too addictive and repetitive for the wrong reasons. My biggest gripe was that it ultimately fell short in providing a comprehensive learning experience. Here are my 3 biggest reasons why:

1. Duolingo Will Keep You Hostage Until You Leave.

A major issue I have with Duolingo is that the app keeps you hostage and tied to their daily streaks until you delete it for good. Not only that, but you can temporarily freeze your streaks if you miss a day or two. I should have lost my daily streak months ago, but because of that, my streak kept going, and I felt obligated to do useless Duolingo lessons just to maintain it. Personally, I found that Duolingo’s bite-sized lessons and constant push for maintaining streaks made learning a language feel like a chore or a game to be won, rather than a rewarding journey.

Just look at how ominous the owl looks ‼️

2. Grinding XP is a Waste of Time.

The leaderboards were fun initially, and I managed to reach the Diamond League. Although I never placed first in the Diamond League, at this point, I couldn’t care less. Similar to daily streaks, grinding for XP is also a colossal waste of time due to the gamification of this app. I used to spend every waking hour on Duolingo grinding for XP, but I honestly don’t have the time or energy anymore to even try and compete in the leagues.

3. Memorization Just Isn’t Enough.

The third issue I have with Duolingo is that it focusses too heavily on translation exercises and sheer memorization of vocabulary and grammar rules. Not only that, but the translations can be funny or plain weird lol I couldn’t help but chuckle multiple times at some of the words and sentences. While the fundamentals of German vocabulary and grammar are important, it doesn’t adequately prepare you for real-world conversations and immersive language learning. Unfortunately, the Duolingo app lacks opportunities for practicing real-time speaking, listening comprehension, and cultural context – all crucial components in order or someone to become proficient in a language. I haven’t personally used Rosetta Stone, but I heard that the program does a slightly better job at language immersion.

(っ◔◡◔)っ FINAL THOUGHTS

While Duolingo may serve as a decent supplementary tool, relying solely on it is unlikely to lead to true language mastery. I’ve realized that deleting the Duolingo app and using additional language learning methods, such as taking classes, conversing with native speakers, and consuming authentic media would be a better use of my time if I were to continue learning German. That being said, I am not traveling to Germany anytime soon and I plan on taking a break from learning a second language for now. I currently have a 477-day streak, but once I publish this blog post, I will delete the app, and my streak will reset in a couple of days. I am at peace with this decision as I feel it is for the best. Btw I took this screenshot a few days ago before switching my account to private mode.

img_3768-2-1
👉My account is private and unsearchable for now.

And one more thing, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t use this app. All I’m saying is maybe use Duolingo as an additional method of learning and not as the Holy Grail when learning a new language. On a slightly unrelated note, I feel that kids could benefit from Duolingo Math and Music, which are newer additions to the language learning app, so I recommend checking those out for any parents whose kids respond well to this style of learning.

Blogging Fatigue

You might have noticed that I have been taking a lot more breaks than usual, and that is partly due to my laziness and partly due to recent jaw surgery that I had 2 weeks ago. I’m recovering slowly from the surgery and it makes it difficult for me to find the time to write. I haven’t blogged in a while and was starting to feel pretty guilty about it, but now I’m glad that I uploaded something even if it is a bit of a rant.

(っ◔v◔)っWhat is blogging fatigue?

It was difficult to find a true definition of “blogging fatigue” and a lot of what I found online was just written from a personal perspective. Blogging fatigue (aka burnout) is just like it sounds: when you become so tired or bored of blogging that you no longer feel motivated to do anything about it.

Do I have blogging fatigue? I am not sure that blogging is worth the time I spend on it. While I enjoy writing and have a lot of ideas to share, there are some obstacles that make me hesitant about throwing more money and time into this pipedream.

Running Out of Time

My domain and hosting renewal date is fast approaching and given WordPress’s recent change to its hosting plans, I’m at a bit of a loss. In short, I currently have the Premium Plan, which was part of the legacy plan. I’m not very impressed with the Premium Plan because it’s missing some notable things that I needed such as SEO and Plugins.

In other words, I cannot politely ask you to buy me a coffee with the help of a Kofi Plugin. This is kinda a dealbreaker for me. ☕💔

While I don’t have any interest in the Pro Plan, I do like what it has to offer. My concern is the price. With my blog being a small hobby blog, why should I have to pay an expensive price for many services that I’ll never need or use? It’s a great plan, but not necessary for my blog.

Furthermore, I have a major issue with throwing my hard-earned money at a hobby blog that doesn’t provide me with enough monetary return to make it worthwhile. As of the time of this writing, I have made exactly $0 from this blog, despite blogging for 6 years. Last year was the trial run to see if I could make something of my blog – I saw very little success which is not enough to justify continuing with my current WP plan. These days, I spend more time writing for Medium because of the ability to monetize. I joined Medium a few months ago and I’ve already been able to generate some revenue with just a handful of my articles.

Down the Perfectionist’s Rabbit Hole

I often find myself stressed out when I need to update my blog every month. If you’re someone who is always worrying about not meeting deadlines, it may seem like a bad thing to skip a few months here or there. It is no surprise that I often obsess over the formatting, wording, and images. Thus, blogging turned me into even more of a perfectionist than I already was. I also felt pressure to generate more and more content, fearing that my blog posts weren’t gaining enough traffic. I noticed that it became tougher to gain followers than it was to lose them.

Is it just me, or is the follower count frozen? I haven’t seen much of an increase in follower count this year and I don’t know if this is due to a recent WordPress update.

Self-Promotion Is Annoying

I find myself feeling frustrated and irritated when it comes to cross-promoting content on social media. I have grown tired of promoting my blog posts, and much like what I have seen so often on Twitter, spamming people with links that don’t seem to lead anywhere. But after a while, I found these behaviors to be less and less appealing to me. Playing the blogging game seems like an enormous time commitment.

Despite the unpleasant things that are often found on social media, I have had many positive interactions too which have helped me with my blogging skills and networking. I’m really thankful to finally receive some help and guidance after spending several hours spinning my wheels and getting frustrated. I have received so many thoughtful comments and now I know whether or not to continue my blog. Thank you to everyone who reached out to me!

I am curious to know if you ever wanted to quit blogging. What made you decide to stay in the end? Please feel free to comment below and I will do my best to reply to everyone. I apologize for my delayed responses recently. It has been an exhausting recovery from jaw surgery, but I’m slowly getting there.

I Did Another Thing on Medium

Image source: Pexels.com by Kristina Paukshtite

If you read my recent blog post about joining Medium, well I did another thing and decided to try my hand at publications. It had been a while since I wrote anything worth sharing, so I thought I might try this as a way to garner more traffic. You can read my previous blog post here:

♡ Related blog post: I Did a Thing and Joined Medium

I often find myself complaining that my blog is not getting many visitors these days, and I was looking for a place where I could improve my content and build a more engaged audience. Even though I’ve been really nervous about branching out and trying something new, I decided to try publishing on a popular platform that has been around for years. My experience so far has been a rewarding one, though it was also nerve-wracking when I had to go from making $0 on my hobby blog to joining the Medium Partner Program (MPP), not knowing what to expect. I am still on the journey of earning enough money for a cup of coffee. ☕💕

Anyways, I submitted an article to a publication on Medium last night and was nervous about the whole process. I chose a publication where the owner personally reached out to all of her contributors. She seemed nice and I wanted to help out. This publication seemed to be the least intimidating out of all the ones I have seen on Medium. Long story short, my article got added to the publication!

Normally, I would re-share my articles on my blog but I decided to put my most recent article behind a paywall. With the great amount of changing trends, publishers have been forced to consider paywalls as a response to the growing subscription economy. In this case, I wanted to implement this feature especially since I published this article exclusively for Medium. You can read my latest article here:

♡ Medium Article: It’s Time to Stop Procrastinating

Depending on how this goes, I will probably be posting most of my articles on the Medium platform. However, I will still share the links on this blog so you can read them.

Medium is a free platform and anyone can join, but if you decide to get a membership, you’ll have access to all the paywall content I’ve published at your heart’s desire. Your membership fee directly supports me and other writers too. You’ll also get full access to every story on Medium.

I Did a Thing and Joined Medium

I joined Medium because blogging got boring.

I have been blogging since Spring 2016 and I have to admit that the novelty has worn off. Blogging has been my creative outlet, but recently, I found myself getting bored of sticking to one type of blog post, specifically listicles and practical guides. At the time, I didn’t even know that I was looking for a new platform that would allow me to express my thoughts and ideas in a diverse manner. Naturally, I am curious and I knew I wanted something that would enable me to make my voice heard by people who might not have listened otherwise. I would be lying if the potential to monetize wasn’t one of the primary drivers for my decision to join Medium.

Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back! —Proverb

👉 You can now find me on Medium! Here’s my account: https://medium.com/@sereneluna

Don’t get me wrong: I still love blogging on WordPress. It is a great way for me to share my thoughts and opinions with the world. I enjoy writing about my experiences, as well as sharing some of the things that I am learning along the way. But right now, blogging on WordPress is just not fun for me. I have tried to keep up with writing engaging content, but I just can’t seem to find anything worth sharing most of the time. I was always excited whenever I received a comment on my blog because it meant that someone had read what I wrote. Due to a lack of new visitors, I’ve been really feeling the burn lately and don’t want to do anything anymore. When this happens, it can be virtually impossible to put the same amount of energy into this blog like I once did. 🙇‍♀️

But It Gets Worse.

I also want to point out that there are only so many topics that I can write about before it becomes repetitive and boring. When you are writing on a weekly basis, it is hard to come up with original ideas that haven’t been covered before. It’s a shame that engagement on my blog is good but traffic and Domain Authority (DA) is pitiful. To be completely transparent, I don’t think I’ll be able to monetize anything on my site at this rate which is discouraging considering the money I’ve sunk into it. Oftentimes, this is a common problem for WordPress bloggers and I am feeling frustrated because of it. When it comes to blogging, I’m just not sure what I should do anymore.

Ideally, I want to find a writing space that allows me to grow and share my ideas with an engaged audience. Most of the time, I feel like I am not targeting the right audience on my blog which is incredibly frustrating. I do want to thank all you people who still come by and read my posts. You’re the reason why I haven’t given up yet and I really appreciate that. This blog wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for my loyal readers and followers! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤

Now I find myself sitting here, wondering what exactly I’m supposed to do now. Do I just stop blogging altogether or find another way to make it fun? I feel like I’m in a bit of a slump and I don’t know how to get out of it. I’m sorry this wasn’t a happier blog post filled with unicorns, rainbows, and good vibes only. 🦄🌈

Summer Blog Party! #Twitter-edition

Twi

A Little Birdie Told Me

I admit that I am most creative when I am dealing with insomnia, and last night was one of those nights. For once, I actually remembered my idea and came up with this gem!💎 I am extremely overtired right now, but I will try my best to explain my idea to you. As you may know, I am not active on social media platforms right now. Some people may argue that blogging is a form of social media, so basically I am was only active on WordPress. However, a little birdie told me about the benefits of using Twitter to help increase blog traffic, so I have decided to reopen and update my abandoned Twitter account, which can be found at @hellokitty8404 💕

*Gasp!* Twitter? But why?!? It’s simple. Because I find methods of communication quite limited on WP and email often dwindles after a few exchanged, heart-to-heart messages. Snail mail is even more unreliable. I sent out mail a few weeks ago and I haven’t heard back from my recipients, so I don’t know if they ever received their mail. That being said, I hope to connect specifically with WP bloggers on Twitter. Blog parties are popular in the WP community, and if you haven’t heard of a blog party, then I’m afraid that you have been living under a rock longer than I have! I was looking for the definition of a blog party, and I found the perfect definition from KaylaAnn’s blog, kaylaannauthor.wordpress.com, where she defines a blog party as:

“Generally speaking, a blog party is an online gathering for bloggers of all kinds to meet and engage with one another.” —KaylaAnn

She goes on to define what blog parties are on Twitter, but that’s where she lost me. My idea is a bit simpler. Anyone who has a Twitter handle (aka. @your.account) could share their handles in the comments section below↓ Currently, I am attempting to follow WP bloggers who also have Twitter accounts, as a way to hopefully improve communication and networking opportunities. However, trying to navigate through each and every one of your blogs is not an easy task or the best use of my time.

maxresdefault

“This will be easy!,” said my illogical, insomniac brain.

I Invite You to Join the Party!

I figured that everyone could benefit from a twitter/blog following networking party by joining the #follow-train (a cringe-worthy hashtag) in the comments section below↓ It’s simple and saves us both time! I will keep the comments section open until next Wednesday, August 5, which happens to be the day after my birthday! 🎉🥳 This gives you a week to join the party if you wish to share your Twitter handle with us bloggers! I promise to follow your Twitter account as long as your account has a) up-to-date tweets from 2020, b) your account isn’t a bot account or full of spam, and c) your account/tweets has some relevance to your blog.

Follow the Steps Below ⬇️

Like. Comment. Engage. Spread the Word.

  • LIKE! You are not obligated to like this blog post, but I appreciate the likes, especially if you would like to see more of these blog posts in the future!
  • COMMENT! Tell us your name, leave a short description telling us what your blog is about, and add your Twitter handle (@your.account) so we can follow you. Please do not skip this step or your comment may end up in my spam folder.
  • ENGAGE: Like KaylaAnn mentioned in her blog post(s), blog parties are not about simply promoting your blog/work, and I completely agree with her statement. There is no party without engagement! I encourage you to visit other blogs and check out their social media accounts too. And follow them if you like their content.
  • SPREAD THE WORD: There is no obligation to re-blog or re-tweet, but I would greatly appreciate it if you did. The more you help spread the message, the more opportunities there will be to meet new bloggers and increase your following as well! ❤

The comments section will remain open from July 28, 2020 – August 5, 2020 at 12 p.m. Mountain Time (MT), so take advantage of this opportunity while you are here, especially if you have a Twitter account. Also, feel free to keep this party going by spreading the word! Remember, our blogs cannot thrive without each other’s support. We are all in this together! ❤
