A Bad Day Made Worse

Have you ever had a tough day when everything seems to go wrong? It can feel overwhelming, like a dark cloud hanging over you. Little annoyances, like spilling coffee or missing the bus, combined with bigger issues like work stress, can lead to frustration and despair. It’s easy to forget the good moments, but it’s important to remember that even in chaos, there is hope for better days ahead. Here’s how I’ve been coping, or at least trying to cope with stress.

A Stressful Monday Morning

Monday morning started with a sharp, annoying pain in my back. You know, the kind that happens when you know you slept funny, so your body punishes you the next day. My back felt all twisted like a pretzel, and I found myself hobbling down the stairs like an old lady with a bad back. It’s crazy how much we take a good spine for granted until it decides to quit on us. Most of the day was spent with excruciating back pain. Luckily, I felt much better by Tuesday evening.

Part of my daily survival ritual involves spending some time in nature, by walking to the nearest park or Tim Hortons down the street. I don’t buy steeped tea every day, but I still try to make it a habit to go outside. Despite my back pain, I desperately need that steaming cup of caffeine to clear the chaotic mental chatter in my head.

(っ◔__◔)っ ♥ P.S. Let’s ignore the fact that I recently ranted about the ridiculous inflation and the annoyances I have with Tim’s. Let’s just ignore all of that because karma got me good. 🙄

I was already halfway there when my husband broke the news to me. He mentioned that my go-to spot was closed, but I didn’t want to believe it. I pulled up the info online, and my heart sank: “Closed until February 26, 2026.”

Who even knows if they will actually reopen? There are rumors going around that their contract with 7-Eleven ended, and this uncertainty makes it feel so much worse. Honestly, this feels like a cruel joke from the universe, especially since I just wrote a blog post called Price Shock: Enough is Enough. It’s like the universe read my blog post and said,

“Oh, you think things are tough? Let’s take away the one thing that brought you joy. Sucks to be you.” 💔

Here in Calgary, I live in the type of climate that makes you regret living in Canada. Standing in that parking lot, shivering, annoyed, and caffeine-deprived, I felt like the universe was sending me a very loud message to go back to bed and stay there, wrapped in my warm blankets like a caterpillar in a cocoon, far removed from the harshness of the cold. The biting wind seemed to mock my every attempt to stay warm as I hugged my arms tightly to my chest, wishing for just a little warmth to seep back into my already chilled bones. At this point, I was half-expecting a penguin to waddle past me and offer some pity, sympathy, or nod of acceptance. 🐧

A Stressful Monday Afternoon

I could not catch a break on Monday. The “bad” became way “worse” the moment I opened my laptop. As many of you know, I poured my heart into my sticker designs. It was a creative outlet that kept me grounded, even when life felt heavy. My most popular rainbow unicorn “caticorn” cat design was staring back at me on a marketplace that felt oh so familiar, but from a seller I had never seen before.

It was a 3rd party seller based in China. They hadn’t just “borrowed” the idea; they had ripped the high-res file, turned it into a sticker, and sold it for a fraction of the price. Their product photos were remotely similar, with water droplets as their “watermark” (Oh, the audacity!) but still, it was MY digital art design! And I am livid! (。•̀ ⤙ •́ 。ꐦ) !!!

ɪ ʀᴇɢʀᴇᴛ ꜱʜᴏᴘᴘɪɴɢ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇᴍᴜ. ɴᴏᴛ ᴀʟʟ ꜱᴇʟʟᴇʀꜱ ᴄᴀɴ ʙᴇ ᴛʀᴜꜱᴛᴇᴅ. ɪ’ᴍ ᴜᴘꜱᴇᴛ ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴇꜱɪɢɴꜱ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴡᴇʀᴇ ᴄᴏᴘɪᴇᴅ. ᴛʜᴇʏ ᴛᴏᴏᴋ ᴍʏ ʙᴇꜱᴛ ᴅᴇꜱɪɢɴ, ᴀɴᴅ ɪ ʜᴀᴠᴇɴ’ᴛ ᴍᴀᴅᴇ ᴀɴʏ ꜱᴀʟᴇꜱ ɪɴ ᴀ ʟᴏɴɢ ᴛɪᴍᴇ.

The most frustrating part? Despite Redbubble offering protection by allowing us to add a watermark, it wasn’t enough to stop the Temu thief from copying the design anyway. The irony is that I often shop on sites like Temu, and you can read my recent blog post here. This feels like the universe’s big “FU” to me for even trying to compete with this conglomerate monster.

Do You Believe in Karma?

I believe in karma—the mirror reflection of what you project into the universe often has a way of creeping into your life and throwing that energy right back at you when you least expect it, including the stuff that you don’t want. Not only that, but you can’t steal someone else’s ethereal energy and creativity, no matter how hard you try to copy someone else, because they’ll always be a few steps ahead of you in the game.

The universe has a way of balancing this energy, including the energy we don’t actually want, thus reminding us that authenticity and hard work are the true pathways to lasting success. So, even though the situation feels devastating right now, I hold onto the belief that integrity will prevail in the long run, revealing the true character of these thieves and shady people who try to take shortcuts at the expense of others.

Searching for Mental Clarity & Meaning

When the mental fog gets this thick and the physical pain becomes so loud that you can’t ignore it, I find myself craving a total “hard reset” for my brain. These days, I often feel the need to disengage from the external world and instead, turn inward on myself. I did a “hard reset” just last week, but it doesn’t seem to have been enough to carry me through this latest avalanche of deregulation, so I think I need to go back to that magical place again. I’m feeling tempted to revisit that deep, earthy, ethereal experience—the kind that lets the brain’s default mode network take a backseat so I can view life from a new, fresh perspective through a world of dreamlike wonder.

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ FINAL THOUGHTS

Often, it’s easier to be hard on ourselves, so we end up attracting even more unwanted things into our lives, whether we’re conscious of it or not. But if I’ve learned anything from blogging, it’s that we have to find a way to take back our own narrative. We have to be the ones to decide when the bad day, week, month, etc., stops being bad. I’m ready for the light to shine again. I’m ready to start showing up as the best version of myself, whatever that newer, weirder version of me happens to be. 🌿

While you are here, I would love to hear your thoughts about this article. Let’s get started, shall we?

Anxiety in Canada shows up everywhere — on the bus in Toronto, in a classroom in Calgary, in a kitchen in Halifax at 2 a.m. when your thoughts won’t shut off. It’s common, it’s treatable, and it doesn’t care whether you’re a student, parent, newcomer, or getting ready to retire. You don’t have to “tough it out” alone, and you don’t need a perfect wellness routine to feel better.

Key things to know in one glance

Anxiety is a normal stress response that becomes a problem when it’s intense, constant, or starts interfering with daily life. You can learn skills to calm your body, work with your thoughts, and ask for help sooner rather than later.

Common anxiety supports and when they help

Approach What it is in plain language When it tends to help most
Deep breathing & grounding exercisesSimple techniques to steady your body and focus on the presentDuring sudden waves of panic, before sleep, or in tense moments
Cognitive behavioural strategiesNoticing and questioning anxious thoughtsWhen your brain is stuck in worst-case scenarios
Physical activity & sleep habitsMoving regularly and keeping a consistent sleep routineWhen stress feels “wired and tired” all the time
Peer or family supportTalking to trusted people in your lifeWhen you feel alone, ashamed, or “too much” for others
Self-help toolsGuides, apps, and worksheets you use at your own paceWhen you want structure but not formal therapy yet
Professional treatmentSupport from a therapist, doctor, or mental health nurseWhen anxiety impacts work, school, parenting, or health

How Anxiety Shows Up for the Average Canadian

👉Here’s a quick, non-judgy look at how anxiety shows up:

  • Racing thoughts about money, family, or world events
  • Tight chest, “buzzing” body, or upset stomach with no clear medical cause
  • Avoiding emails, phone calls, or potential networking events because they feel overwhelming
  • Checking things repeatedly (locks, messages, work) for fear of missing something
  • Trouble falling asleep because your brain is replaying the entire day

Note: If you see yourself in that list, it doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means your nervous system is working overtime and needs support, not criticism.

When work and career worries drive your anxiety

For many people in Canada, worry ramps up around job security, career changes, or feeling stuck in a role that doesn’t fit. Turning that foggy fear into a concrete learning or training plan can bring a surprising sense of relief and control. Choosing a clear path to build new skills, switch industries, or qualify for different roles gives your mind something structured and hopeful to focus on.

If you’re drawn to technology or digital work, exploring a computer science degree online can be one way to transform “I’m behind” into “I’m building something.” For example, if you dream of a tech career, by working toward an online degree in computer science, you can build your skills in AI along with IT, programming, and computer science theory. Online degree programs make it easier to keep working while you study, so you can protect your income while moving toward a different future.

This kind of intentional learning doesn’t remove every anxious thought, but it does change the story: you’re no longer just worrying about your career — you’re actively shaping it.

Questions Canadians often ask about anxiety

  1. “Is what I’m feeling serious enough to count as anxiety?”

If your worries feel hard to control, stick around most days, and are affecting your sleep, relationships, school, or work, it’s worth treating them as more than “just stress.” Anxiety problems are common and respond well to support and treatment.

  2. “Can self-help tools really make a difference?”

Yes, especially when you use them consistently and combine them with other supports. Resources like worksheets, meditation apps, and online guides can teach you skills used in therapy, such as challenging anxious thoughts and gradually facing fears.

  3. “When should I talk to my doctor or a mental health professional?”

Good times to reach out include: when anxiety has lasted for weeks or months, when you’re avoiding important parts of life because of fear, or when your coping habits (like alcohol, cannabis, or endless scrolling) are starting to cause problems of their own. A family doctor, nurse practitioner, or community clinic can help you explore options and referrals in your province.

  4. “What if I’m in crisis right now?”

If you’re thinking about suicide or feel you can’t stay safe, you can call or text 9-8-8 anywhere in Canada, any time of day or night. You can also find crisis contacts through organizations like the Canadian Mental Health Association, which lists national and provincial help lines.

A small self-scan for tough days

👉You can use this quick check-in once a day or once a week:

☐ I did something (however small) to move my body today.
☐ I ate at least one meal that wasn’t just caffeine and snacks.
☐ I spent a few minutes away from my phone or laptop.
☐ I acknowledged how I was feeling instead of pretending I was “fine.”
☐ I connected with at least one person or community — in person, online, or by phone.
☐ I know who I’d reach out to if my anxiety suddenly got much worse.

Note: Even one or two checkmarks is a sign you’re actively caring for your mental health.

A Canadian resource worth bookmarking

If you’d like structured, evidence-based guidance you can use on your own schedule, Anxiety Canada offers free information, self-help plans, and tools designed specifically for children, youth, and adults across the country. Their website includes a “My Anxiety Plan,” downloadable guides, and links to the MindShift CBT app, which teaches coping skills based on cognitive behavioural therapy.

Bringing it all together

Anxiety may be loud, but it isn’t the final word on who you are or what your life in Canada can look like. Small, repeatable actions — breathing, moving, connecting, learning, asking for help — slowly train your nervous system to feel safer. Over time, you build resilience: the ability to bend without breaking when life is hard. And if today feels especially heavy, remember you don’t have to carry it alone; support is closer and more available than it often seems.

I really appreciate that Davis curated this blog post for Canadians! Growing up here and moving between provinces three times, I’ve seen how some places can be colder or more expensive, but no matter where you are, each place has its own quirks—especially when it comes to dealing with anxiety and everyday stress. The truth is, anxiety affects all of us, no matter where we live. It’s great to have resources like Anxiety Canada and the Canadian Mental Health Association to help us navigate our system. A huge shoutout to Davis for reminding us that we’ve got the tools to bounce back right here at home!

My Favorite Time of Day: 0200

Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite time of day?

The Stillness of 2:00 AM

My favorite time of day is 2:00 AM (0200 on the 24-hour clock), when the world outside is cloaked in a deep, calming silence that feels like a rare gift. With my family sound asleep and no distractions like phone notifications, emails, or daily errands pulling at my attention, my mind feels free to wander and explore new possibilities. This quiet hour transforms my home into a peaceful haven where I can dream up blog post ideas, reflect on life’s big questions, or simply enjoy the stillness that sparks my most creative thoughts.

•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

The Quiet of the Night

To wind down at 0200, I love tuning into podcasts about psychology and philosophy, which explore fascinating ideas about how our minds work or what it means to be human. The stillness of the night amplifies every word, making it feel like I’m sitting down for a private chat with brilliant thinkers, sparking inspiration for my own projects or personal reflections. Without the noise of daytime distractions, I can dive deeply into these thought-provoking topics, letting my imagination soar and connecting ideas in ways that feel exciting and new. Some nights, I dive into them so deeply that I end up pulling an all-nighter because the topics are incredibly fascinating.

The Quiet of the Morning

I’m not usually a morning person, but every now and then, I find myself at a Tim Hortons or McDonald’s around 8:00 AM, after dropping my toddler off at Montessori, greeted by the crisp, fresh air outside that wakes me up just a little. Inside, the soft hum of early-morning conversations and the gentle clink of coffee cups create a soothing, welcoming atmosphere, offering a brief escape from the chaotic mental chatter in my head. I always grab a steaming caffeinated drink—rarely food—and as I sip it, I tune into a podcast, catching fleeting moments of the mental clarity I cherish at night, though the bustle of the waking world often tugs at my focus. These rare morning visits carry a quiet charm, brightened by the refreshing breeze outside, but they can’t match the deep, uninterrupted stillness of 2:00 AM, my treasured time for profound reflection and bursts of creative inspiration.

I realize this blog post turned out more serious than I planned, but it’s no surprise I’m publishing it at 3:30 AM, and no that’s not a typo. As I mentioned, my mental focus is better at night, when the stillness of the night lets my thoughts flow freely. What’s your preferred time of day, and what makes it special for you? Are you a morning lark or a night owl? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Join the conversation by leaving a comment below! ↓

I’m back, but don’t hold your breath.

Hi everyone! It has been a few months since I wrote a blog post, which should be no surprise to anyone by now. I know I have been away forway too long, and I am trying to make it up to you all. I didn’t mean to leave you hanging like a forgotten Labubu. Life is just… ugh, a total mess. I lost my laptop mouse, so I am typing this on the family desktop computer. Normally, I wouldn’t have time for a personal blog update, but when the husband’s away… the wife will write, or at least pretend to! 😝 I’m back for now, but don’t count on me blogging regularly. I have #ADD brain (high functioning, no meds). I don’t know when I’ll find my laptop mouse, but its got to be somewhere in the house (hey… it rhymes!). Speaking of which, I need to finish refining and uploading my poems but I don’t want to get carried away and risk blogging burnout again. Just be happy there’s something new to read, okay?

Redbubble Broke My Heart 💔

Redbubble was my side hustle and it ate up most of my free time when I wasn’t gaming. Now? It’s more like #Deadbubble —it’s not going to be my side hustle for much longer. Remember my little sticker shop? I made 116 unique designs since I joined, and poured my soul into these whimsical designs. I used what little commissions I made for coffee money (hello, caffeine addiction), in-game purchases for my Infinity Nikki obsession, and to support small artists on Etsy. Last week, Redbubble sent us the most disrespectful email I’ve ever seen. Redbubble’s fee changes, starting September 1st, 2025, is straight-up unethical, taking up to 50% of artists’ earnings, plus an extra 50% if you dare set your margins above 20%. That’s almost ALL of our profit margins, which is straight-up theft and a slap-in-the-face to small artists like me. I joined Redbubble because it seemed fun to design aesthetically pleasing stickers and merch, using the knowledge and skills that I learned about image scaling, resolution, and vector design. To date, I’ve sold 190 stickers and 8 buttons. You’d think that is a lot of money, but I don’t make much in commissions.

Still, it was nice to have little $20 payouts from Redbubble every few months.

Redbubble artists are leaving in droves and I don’t blame them. I’m not closing my shop, but I can’t keep up with their greed and need to offset it in some way, which only adds to my side hustle struggle. That coffee money is coming to an end, and not only that, but my passive income is coming to an end. There’s currently $8.20 sitting in my account that Redbubble is holding hostage until I reach the $20 threshold. At this rate, come September, it’s going to take forever to even make $20. Redbubble’s new scheme for Standard and Premium tiers reeks of a scam at this point…. artist income no more!

🌸 My Redbubble Shop: @sereneluna 🌸

I left that message for anyone who stumbles upon my shop to warn them about what’s actually going on. I doubt it will be enough to bring about change, but it did force me to re-evaluate where I should put my time and energy. I mostly post my thoughts on Twitter/𝕏 (@serene_hilz) because it helps me with my scattered #ADD thoughts. Perhaps, it’s time to share my thoughts with you guys through long-form content, which ironically helps me manage my ADD (the one without the hyperactivity). You can also find me on Bluesky if Twitter/𝕏 isn’t your thing (@sereneluna.bsky.social) but DMs are deactivated on Bluesky.

Grateful for You, Always ❤️

I’m not giving up on my Redbubble shop entirely, but I’m pivoting to blogging to keep my creative block at bay while I search for a new side hustle. By the way, I started Ko-fi crowdfunding to fuel my caffeine addiction, so if you want to support me ($5 CAD or $3.50 USD is just a suggestion), I’d be forever grateful (link below ↓). The money will go toward keeping this blog alive—blogging ain’t cheap, folks!

If you can donate to help me improve this site, I would be really grateful! (◡‿◡✿)

I’m grateful for you, my readers and subscribers, for sticking around despite my silence. The sound of silence is uncomfortable, isn’t it? (cue the crickets….) Despite being MIA for months, this blog still manages to get organic traffic, which was another reason why I upgraded my WordPress Plan yet again. Like all of my hobbies, this one might not last because blogging burnout is real, but I see potential and hopefully, the start of something beautiful. 🐇💕

The Offbeat Path to Peace: Unconventional Ways to Tend to Your Mental Health

It’s easy to get stuck in the same mental health advice loop: meditate, journal, drink more water, get eight hours of sleep. All helpful, sure—but what happens when those tools stop working? Or when they don’t click with you to begin with? Everyone’s brain has its own flavor, and sometimes, feeling better requires coloring outside the lines. So instead of repeating the same mental health script, let’s talk about some under-the-radar methods that might actually light you up.

A Practical Guide to Finding Inner Peace

1. Build Something Bad on Purpose. Perfectionism has a way of masquerading as productivity, but it’s often just a bully in your brain wearing a tie. One way to push back? Make something intentionally terrible. Write a god-awful poem, draw the world’s ugliest self-portrait, build a cardboard robot that barely stands up. The point is to disarm that inner critic by showing yourself it’s safe to fail—and to have fun doing it. When you practice letting go of the outcome, you’ll be surprised how much space opens up inside your mind.

2. Hang Out With an Unrelated Elder. There’s something wildly grounding about spending time with someone who’s lived through decades of life that you haven’t. Especially if they’re not family. They come with fewer emotional landmines and usually a good story or two. Whether it’s through a volunteer program or just striking up conversation at the same coffee shop every week, this kind of relationship resets your priorities in the best way. Plus, you get wisdom without the lecture tone.

3. Stay in the Present. Mindfulness isn’t just about deep breathing or sitting cross-legged in silence—it’s about paying attention on purpose, even when your thoughts are loud and messy. When you’re grounded in the now, you’re less likely to spiral into regrets about the past or anxieties about the future. It helps you notice the small good things—the sound of your neighbor’s laugh, the sun slanting across your floor, the taste of your first sip of coffee. By embracing the present moment without judgment, you create space for a more positive and balanced mindset.

4. Put Your Hands in Actual Dirt. Look, you can read a hundred articles about how gardening helps with anxiety, but it’s not just about the plants—it’s about the grime. There’s something deeply recalibrating about plunging your hands into the earth. It doesn’t have to be a full garden. Even a little patch of herbs in a pot can connect you to something older than worry. When your mind feels like static, dirt reminds you you’re a living thing.

5. Invent a Personal Ceremony. Rituals don’t need to be spiritual or dramatic to be meaningful. Sometimes your brain just wants a sign that things are moving forward. You could write down something you’re done with, fold it up, and burn it in a safe place. Or take a “transition walk” every time you finish a tough task. The key is consistency and intention—doing the same thing in the same way to mark shifts, even tiny ones. Over time, it helps your mind organize chaos into something with shape.

6. Get Obsessed with a Hyper-Niche Topic. Mental health thrives when curiosity takes the wheel. Deep-diving into something super specific—like traditional Norwegian sweater patterns or 1970s underground punk zines—can be surprisingly healing. It gives your brain a break from you and your thoughts, which is a gift. You don’t need to turn it into a side hustle or share it with anyone. The joy is in having something that’s just yours, untouched by algorithms or opinions.

7. Rent a Weird Airbnb in Your Own City. You don’t have to travel across the globe to shake your brain out of a slump. Book the strangest Airbnb within 30 minutes of your home—a yurt, a converted bus, a room with 18 lava lamps—and go there with no expectations. The goal isn’t luxury. It’s novelty. A change of scenery, even for one night, can jolt your senses in the best way and make your inner world feel less stale.

8. Host a “No-Small-Talk” Dinner. Surface-level conversation is exhausting when you’re already mentally taxed. So flip the script. Invite a couple of people over and have a rule: no small talk. Come prepared with big, weird, or deep questions and see what happens. Even if it gets awkward, it’ll be real, and your brain will thank you for bypassing the usual social autopilot. Connection is more healing when it’s not wrapped in “How’s work?”

Improving your mental health doesn’t always mean applying cookie-cutter solutions to your one-of-a-kind experience. You don’t have to vibe with meditation apps or force yourself into gratitude journals if they don’t click. What matters most is that you find what feels right for you—even if it looks strange from the outside. Especially if it looks strange from the outside. Sometimes, mental clarity comes from stepping off the obvious path and walking straight into the peculiar. That’s where your mind gets to play, to stretch, and to heal—not by following a blueprint, but by building your own.

100 Self-Reflective Prompts | Part 2 of 6

👉But First, Some Housekeeping.

This is a continuation of Part 1 of 6. I’m sorry for taking so long to create Part 2 of 6 and I might have taken on more than I can handle 🙈 I haven’t touched my laptop in a few weeks, and since I write and edit all my blog posts on it, that’s been a huge barrier preventing me from blogging. I don’t like blogging from the main computer, and using my phone to write isn’t my preference either. My laptop only gets used if it’s sitting on the dining room table—nowhere else. I attempted to set up a workspace upstairs, but it’s too cold and unwelcoming up there.

Background: I’m not telling anyone to participate, but I invite you to join the conversation and share your insights. Shoutout to @Coolbeans4 who gave me a Pingback and tagged me in a blog post! I appreciate the Pingbacks and tags, especially for anyone who decides to do this challenge. I’d love to read your answers! I’ve divided the 100 questions into six blog posts, each focusing on different themes to encourage meaningful discussions. My answers reflect my personal experiences, which vary for each individual.

100 Self-Reflective Prompts: Q17 – 33

17. What kind of person do you want to be known for? I want to be known as a kind soul and a person who lives with integrity, someone who consistently demonstrates compassion and empathy towards others. I aspire to be remembered as someone who not only stands by their principles but also uplifts those around them through acts of kindness, understanding, and support. 😊💕

18. Who inspires you the most? How would you describe their character traits? I draw inspiration from multiple individuals. What these people share is a knack for influencing others authentically. They’re bold in voicing their thoughts, unafraid to stand out, and they frequently hold views that go against the grain—views that, more often than not, turn out to be true.

19. What builds up your confidence? What deflates your confidence? My confidence grows when I’m at a healthy weight where I feel good, avoiding the discomfort of being overweight (tight clothes are the worst), and sticking to my own values and principles—like my unique approach to diet. On the flip side, my confidence takes a hit when people raise their voices at me, put me down, or act rudely right to my face, whether online or offline. Rudeness, no matter the medium, stings and drags me down.

20. Who supports you in your life regardless of what happens? My family stands by me through thick and thin. My husband may not fully get me and I don’t expect him to, but he’s always by my side. My parents are usually supportive, even if they don’t completely understand me either. I used to lean on online friends for encouragement, but lately, I’ve been finding answers in communities and forums instead. I’ve also got a dear friend back home who’s there for me. She’s the one who really knows everything I’m navigating personally right now.

21. What qualities are you drawn to in other people? Are they healthy or unhealthy? Alright, this might come off as a bit shallow, but this is my blog so anything goes. I’m naturally drawn toward people who radiate confidence and have a beauty that’s both internal and external. I’m attracted to those who are self-assured and have a clear sense of direction in life. I admire people who are born teachers—those who can guide a group and sway a crowd effortlessly, for the greater good. Fame doesn’t matter much to me; it’s more about their character and the values they uphold.

22. What makes you feel the most like yourself? I feel most authentic when I can freely express myself and share my passions with others without restraint. My interests—like gaming, anime, nutrition, and nutraceutical sciences (NANS)—might come off as quirky to many. I’m happiest when I’m with people who get me, whether we’re digging into the science of health and wellness or enjoying games like Infinity Nikki. Idk about you but I’m looking forward to playing InZOI on Steam. I’m hoping to get the game sometime in April.

23. What makes you so happy you lose track of time? I often get lost in my passions, especially when I’m digging into research and find myself spiraling down a rabbit hole. Time seems to vanish, especially when I’m locked in on something that captivates me. Recently, I’ve poured all my spare time into Infinity Nikki, but now that I’m caught up, there’s not much left to do in the game at the moment.

24. What could you give a TED Talk on if you were asked to present tomorrow? If I had to give a TED Talk, I’d probably speak on optimizing clipart and vector designs—something I feel pretty solid about. Nutrition? Not so much. I’m still deep in the research phase and wouldn’t call myself an expert by any stretch.

25. When do you feel most alive? When I’m awake.

26. What qualities do you possess that you dislike about yourself? Honestly, I can get a little too caught up in trying to nail every detail, perfectionism creeps in. It’s a drag when it slows me down or makes me second-guess myself. Also, I’ve got a tendency to over-explain things sometimes, which might come off as long-winded when I’m just trying to be clear.

27. What qualities do you look for in a friend or partner? Essentially the opposite of what I’ve experienced with past friends and partners. I’ve faced plenty of inconsistency, untrustworthiness, and closed-mindedness, so I’d seek someone who comes across as reliable and sincere, even if that’s tricky to spot, while also being receptive and truly invested in our friendship.

28. How do you present yourself in relationships? I think I’m someone who shows up with a lot of heart, aiming to be steady and real for the other person. I try to listen and understand where they’re coming from, even if I don’t always get it perfect. I’m big on being open and keeping things honest, though I can sometimes overthink what I bring to the table or how I’m coming across. I’d say I’m supportive and willing to put in the effort, but I also value having my own space to recharge.

29. What drives you internally? I am internally driven by curiosity and the search for truth.

30. What habits that your parents/guardians process that you see in yourself today? I’m not sure if I understand the question. Are you asking about the habits my parents possess that I see in myself, or are you asking about the habits my parents see in me that I also recognize in myself?

31. What is your personal elevator pitch? (How do you Introduce yourself? Hi [insert name]. My name is Hilary. I try to be funny to lighten the mood—some people may even find me hilarious.

32. What does your space say about you? What do you want to change? I’m unclear on the question—are we referring to my physical or personal surroundings, or my online footprint? My physical space looks like it belongs to someone with ADD. I’m always misplacing stuff, and no matter how much I tidy or declutter, it never feels orderly. I avoid collecting things since that just fuels the chaos I call my “space.”

33. Do other people’s opinions impact your life on a daily basis? I would say it is a mix of yes and no. Their words hang around and drag me down daily, but in the big picture, I live on my own terms and don’t give s*** about their opinions of me. Only I know the truth about myself—not them.

100 Self-Reflective Prompts

Background: I’m not tagging anyone in this post, but I invite you to join the conversation and share your insights. If you write a similar blog post with the following prompts, please tag me your blog post. I’d love to read your answers! I’ve divided the 100 questions into six blog posts, each focusing on different themes to encourage meaningful discussions. My answers reflect my personal experiences, which vary for each individual.

100 Self-Reflective Prompts: Part 1 of 6

1. How do you feel you presented yourself to the world today? I am mostly content with what I have accomplished in my life so far, but I have no desire to become famous or create change in the world. Have I met society’s standards for how a 33-year-old should show up in the world? I would say yes.

2. How do you feel you treated others this week? I don’t usually talk to people unless it’s online or I’m at work. It’s just an ordinary week. I mostly interact with my family. Honestly, I was cranky this week and wasn’t the friendliest person to be around.

5. What is bringing you meaning to life currently? My family is my top priority, and my job comes second. I work casually, which suits me best at this time in my life. I want to find a sustainable and enjoyable side hustle to bring more meaning to my life and give me a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

4. What 3 words would you use to describe yourself? Introspective, Introvert, Impatient.

5. How would you describe myself in 10 words or fewer? Creative, intellectual, blogger, strong-willed, hates being cold, loves animals.

6. How would/does isolation impact you? Too much isolation from others makes me uncomfortable. I need some interaction. However, isolation doesn’t seem to affect me as negatively as it does extroverted people.

7. Do you need people around you to feel happy? For my mental health, yes. I have my husband and 2 kids.

8. What do you feel your purpose is in the world? My purpose is to serve others and make their lives a little better.

9. How do you want others to feel about you? Depends. I’ve had people call me fake. I’ve had people call me a b**** and a hypocrite. These are the same people who have never met me in person yet think they know me because I’m open when conversing with others. Superficial conversations are usually a waste of time.

10. What problems do you have in life currently? How can you work to resolve them? I am dissatisfied with my country and the incompetent federal government. There’s so much corruption, and I worry about the economy. Yes, I have a job, but nothing is ever guaranteed in life. I want to leave Canada, but our kids are happy here, and it’s hard to just pack up and move. We are figuring out which state we will move to.

11. What makes you feel excited to wake up every morning? A hot beverage and perhaps a new podcast to listen to, or maybe a new YouTube video from a favorite YouTuber to watch, are little things to look forward to every day.

12. How would your younger self feel about you currently? I’m impressed and in disbelief. I never expected so much of myself when I was younger. I never thought I would get married at 24 and have two kids in my 20’s. Becoming an RN in my late 20’s seemed like an unachievable dream too.

13. What moments altered your life fundamentally? Hitting rock bottom financially, failing a university course, and becoming rebellious at 21 were pivotal moments that fundamentally altered my life.

14. If you had one year to do whatever you wanted, what would you do? I honestly don’t know. I’d like to win the lottery, but I don’t think that’s even an option. Maybe travel the world? As long as I have no obligations weighing me down.

15. What would you consider to be “your element”? Um, my element is fire🔥because I was born in August. I don’t think that’s what this question is asking though.

16. How does life look compared to what you expected it to look like? Well, I thought I would still be living with my parents in my 30s. Luckily, I was able to move out at 23 and haven’t had to move back in with them yet! I moved across the country and live in a different province. So, I guess my life looks very different from what I thought it would.

If you’ve completed Part 1 of this series, congratulations! There are only five more blog posts to come! 😆 Moving forward, I need to focus on writing instead of just thinking about it. I started this to help me break free from my rut and stop scrolling through social media. Feel free to leave your thoughts and/or feedback in the comments section below ↓

Should I Change my Blogging Style?

In the blogging world, there’s a constant struggle between creating high-quality content and posting consistently so readers remember you. Recently, I’ve been dealing with this challenge. I usually take great care when crafting each blog post. I meticulously refine every sentence. I make sure that everything is perfect down to the last detail. Still, I’ve realized that I need to be more relaxed in my approach. I also need to be more spontaneous. Some bloggers easily share their thoughts as they come. They embrace imperfection and authenticity. They do not worry too much about details like I do. This contrasts sharply with my perfectionist tendencies, where every comma and phrase must feel just right before I hit “publish.” If you’re anything like me, then keep reading.

••◦ ❈ ◦••

Like a diary but not like a diary 📖

Blogging like it was someone’s open-book diary has always irritated me and it still does to this day. Still, you’ve got to admire bloggers who have a total disregard for perfectionism. The lack of polish, the disregard for aesthetic perfection, and the casualness of their content seemed, frankly, unprofessional to me. Yet, as time passed, I found myself envying their freedom. They post at odd hours. They use stock photos from the internet. Sometimes, they don’t use any photos at all. Their posts can range from a few lines to lengthy rants on controversial topics like politics. God forbid if you disagree with them. They do all of this with an audacity that I secretly admire.

Image generated using AI ✨💫

This brings me to a pivotal question for my blog:

Should I adopt this approach? There’s a certain allure to the idea of blogging more spontaneously, from the heart, without overthinking every detail. These bloggers, with their unfiltered posts, seem to embody a raw honesty that resonates with readers. Ultimately, these bloggers aren’t just creating content; they’re sharing their lives, unedited and unfiltered. I’m thinking about changing my blogging style. I want to shift from focusing on quality over quantity to emphasizing quantity over quality. This change will help me prevent long-term burnout.

What do you prefer? Would you enjoy more frequent, less polished posts that include off-the-cuff thoughts, diary-style entries, or even the occasional rant? Let’s be real. Most of my blog posts are about me whining about how hard life is. Or do you appreciate the current format? I spend considerable time on each post. That’s if I even bother posting it at all.

Image generated using AI ✨💫

Most importantly, I’m not aiming for my blog to be just another lifestyle and goal-oriented blog. There are countless blogs out there, many of which are deemed superior in terms of presentation or content depth. Yet, what sets a blog apart is its voice. It has a unique perspective and its ability to connect on a personal level. Additionally, the writer needs the ability to keep going. ✍️

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ FINAL THOUGHTS ♥

Do you want to see more spontaneous, less edited blog posts? Would a diary-style entry resonate with you more than a polished article? Do you value the effort I put into each blog post? Even if that means it takes me a century to publish something? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below ↓ I want to hear from you. 😊🤍

P.S. Please follow me on Twitter/𝕏 (@serene_hilz) if you aren’t already. You can learn more about AI image generation there, if that’s your thing. While some believe AI is bad, I view it as a valuable tool with endless possibilities~! I have an unpopular opinion, but that’s fine with me.

Fire Safety

A few weeks ago, my husband and I took our children to the local fire department in our community where they had engaging activities for the kids, aimed at teaching them about fire safety and prevention. We got some informative brochures and colorful booklets that contained various tips and guidelines on how to stay safe in case of a fire emergency. I wanted to share the important information and key takeaways from what we learned, as I believe this knowledge is vital for everyone. Everything here can be found at www.fwp.org, where you’ll find resources and additional information to help keep your family safe.

Photos are my own. Baby Aaron with big sister Rebecca.

Some Facts About House Fires

⟢ Fire moves FAST. You could have as little as 2 minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.

⟢ Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half.

⟢ Roughly 60% of home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you!

1️⃣Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
2️⃣Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on each level of the home.
3️⃣Be sure to change the batteries at least once a year.
4️⃣Replace smoke alarms when they are 10 years old and don’t respond when tested.

🔥🔥🔥

A Quick Review for Kids: STOP, DROP & ROLL!

Stay away from fire. Fire from a match, lighter, fireplace, or BBQ could catch clothes on fire. If your clothes catch fire….

STOP where you are. DROP to the ground. Lay flat with your legs out straight and cover your eyes and mouth with your hands.

And…ROLL over and over, back and forth until the flames are out!

🔥🔥🔥

Life Saving Tips for Families

⟢ Crawl Low Under Smoke. If you must escape a fire, crawl low to the ground and go under the smoke to your nearest exit. Get out and stay out! Call 9-1-1 ASAP.

⟢ Plan Your Escape Route. Always have 2 ways out of your home and remember to practice your plan at least twice a year.

⟢ Plan ahead and make a meeting place. A meeting place is a safe place outside for everyone to meet at.

You’re the hero if you stayed and read the whole blog post. I know you’re probably wondering why I haven’t posted in months. The routines that once excited me felt mundane, and I started questioning the purpose of sharing my thoughts online. Despite spending time on other social media, mainly Twitter/𝕏, it felt impersonal, and I missed the connection of writing longer blog posts. It dawned on me that I still had so much to share—stories and insights that could bring value to others, reigniting my passion for blogging and meaningful interaction, was was clearly lacking on other social media platforms.

Unmasking Your True Potential to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

Background: My friend Davis recently reached out to me with a new blog post for www.sereneluna.net. If you remember, he has made guest appearances before. Since Davis wrote the following guest post, I cannot take credit for it. While you are here, I would love to hear your thoughts about this article. Let’s get started, shall we?

Imagine a world where your achievements are not shadowed by self-doubt but celebrated with genuine self-acceptance. Often, the most significant barrier to realizing your full potential is not external challenges but the internal battle with “imposter syndrome.” This guide aims to provide you with practical strategies to dismantle that barrier, fostering a mindset conducive to personal and professional growth.

A Practical Guide to Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

1. Spotting the Signs of Imposter Syndrome. The first step in conquering imposter syndrome is to recognize its symptoms. You might feel like a fraud despite apparent successes, fear that you will not live up to expectations, or believe that your achievements are due to luck. These feelings can be intense, but identifying them as common manifestations of imposter syndrome is crucial. Acknowledging these feelings without judgment allows you to begin overcoming them, setting the foundation for genuine self-assurance.

2. Fostering Self-Development. Focus on your personal development and measure success based on your progress, not against others. Setting personal benchmarks and celebrating small victories are vital. Each step forward, no matter how small, is a testament to your capabilities and a step away from the shadows of doubt. Concentrating on your growth reinforces your self-worth and gradually diminishes the power impostor syndrome holds over you.

3. Entrepreneurship Beyond Doubt. Once you’ve conquered imposter syndrome and kicked off your business, think about using an online logo maker to create a personalized logo (especially if you’re working with a limited budget). You can pick a style and icon that matches your brand’s vision, then add any text you want to the design. This tool lets you browse different logo options and tweak the fonts and colors, so you can design a cool and creative logo that perfectly fits your business’s unique identity.

4. Embracing Imperfections. Allow yourself the freedom to make mistakes, seeing them as opportunities for learning. Recognizing that errors are not failures but essential parts of the learning curve can foster resilience. This shift in perspective is critical to combating imposter syndrome. Each mistake you make is a stepping stone to mastery, underscoring that growth, not perfection, is the goal. This approach helps you develop a more balanced view of yourself and your capabilities.

5. Seeking Professional Guidance. When imposter syndrome severely impacts your life, it might be time to seek help from a professional. Counselors and therapists specialize in providing strategies and support tailored to overcoming such challenges. They offer a safe space to explore these feelings and develop practical approaches to dismantle the insidious doubts that impede your progress.

6. Sharing and Validating Your Feelings. Talking about your feelings of inadequacy helps demystify them and reinforces that you are not alone in this struggle. Sharing your thoughts with trusted friends, mentors, or colleagues offers new perspectives and reassurance. Their feedback helps affirm your rightful place in your achievements. Such encouragement enables you to internalize your successes. Through these conversations, you gain confidence and a clearer understanding of your professional worth.

7. Reflecting on Your Achievements. You solidify your capabilities by keeping a written record of your achievements and the skills you used to reach them. This practice constantly reminds you of your competencies and aids in internalizing your successes. Regularly updating this record creates tangible evidence of your growth and effectiveness. This documentation directly counters the narrative of imposter syndrome. Each entry reinforces your rightful confidence in your abilities and accomplishments.

8. Visualizing Success. Practice visualizing yourself succeeding in your tasks and roles. This mental rehearsal can significantly boost your confidence and reduce feelings of being an impostor. Visualization is a powerful tool for embedding a positive self-image and aligning your subconscious with your conscious goals, facilitating a stronger belief in your abilities.

Stepping out of the shadows of imposter syndrome requires continuous effort and dedicated strategies. By adopting these approaches, you’re not just aiming to silence the internal critic but to amplify the voice of your true self, one that recognizes and celebrates your capabilities and achievements. Unlock your full potential by shedding the unfounded doubts and embracing a journey of genuine self-recognition and accomplishment.

Blog Posts Left Unwritten

The title of this blog post was inspired by the song “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. If you don’t know the song, go check it out on YouTube now – it’s guaranteed to bring back memories and good vibes!

Who Should I Give Credit To?

I’m not sure who gave me the idea to make this blog post. I believe I got the idea from Pooja, who runs a popular blog named Lifesfinewhine. It’s been a hot minute but I’m fairly sure it was her, unless it was another blogger. I do remember reading a post about it years ago. Pooja, if you’re reading this, please correct me if I’m wrong.

At this point, I realized that I had to face the harsh realization that I have no intention of completing these drafts, regardless of the reason. Since some of these ideas are unconventional, weird, or super random, I thought, why not share them with you? Perhaps you’ll discover a different side of me that you haven’t seen before. The benefit of this is that I can finally reduce the number of drafts I have. I currently have 60 drafts which is bit too much.

1. I Got Scammed on Facebook!

Drafted since: August 2017

In the year 2017 where Facebook ads are practically harassing your news-feed, it should be safe to assume that all ads can be trusted, given the thousands of comments that follow, legit looking websites and even legit-looking reviews on these endorsed advertisements. In the year 2017, it should be safe to assume that Facebook cares about your well-being and wouldn’t endorse websites that sell knock-offs, right? WRONG.

In case you are wondering what this scam was about, I had ordered a nostalgic 1990’s Tamagotchi, yenno, the ones we had as kids. I saw a great deal on Facebook and jumped on board before realizing that it was a cheap knockoff of the real thing. Stupid of me, I know. It is quite evident why I have not been able to complete this blog post, as it has already been a staggering 6+ years since this incident had taken place.

👉 FYI They looked legit in the FB ad, okay? Don’t judge.

2. Flickr Frustrations

Drafted since: June 2019

As you may know, I am not only trying to work on decluttering my physical environment, but also dealing with my digital clutter. I haven’t realized just how bad the digital mess has gotten until I opened my Flickr account this afternoon after a long 2-year digital hiatus. I love the Flickr app because I can use it to find photos without having to keep backup copies on my phone or computer. Correction: I loved Flickr until they started charging for the service and I had to shell out $20 just to retrieve my photos.

3. The Luxuries of Jaw Surgery

Drafted since: July 2021

Jaw surgery is not something we are entitled to. If you’re one of the few unfortunate people who needs this surgery done, then you might understand where I’m coming from. I didn’t know I even needed this surgery until I had my first consultation ever with an orthodontist yesterday. I sensed that something was very wrong with my smile and jaw alignment, but everyone around me denied it and convinced me I was fine. Well, I’m not fine. This is the first time in my life that I’m putting myself first and caring about my health.

Deep down, I care about the way I look. Call me shallow, egotistical or whatever, but I think that all humans to a degree care about these things. If you wear tons of makeup, you definitely care about how you present yourself to the world. Obsessed with clothes and shoes? Join the club. I don’t fit either of these categories, but I do care about my weight and physique.

4. Tropical Rockets Candy Review

Drafted since: October 2020

In the United States, these candies are known as Smarties. Canadian smarties are very different. I had high hopes for Tropical Rockets but there is literally no difference between the Original Rockets and Tropical Rockets, except for the colours. I don’t even know what the flavours are supposed to be since they all taste the same to me. In the tropical pack however, green was added to the mix, and surprisingly, these rockets tasted a bit like sour lime. At least they tasted like something, and not some unidentifiable chalky candy.

5. That Time I Tried Making Supplements

Drafted since: December 2019

I’m sure that you have all done weird things at some point in your life. We’re humans after all, so it’s no surprise that humans do weird sh*t. Who knows, maybe I will end up writing about it one day because I think it would make for a good story. I ended up making calcium/eggshell supplement powder (don’t ask), and weight-loss pills using paprika and some other spices. You can turn pretty much anything into a supplement if you have dissolvable gel capsules. It ended up being a big waste of money and it made a big mess, but it was a fun experiment.

6. The Diderot Effect Just Got Real

Drafted since: August 2020

What is the Diderot effect? Great Question! The best definition I found comes from Understanding the Diderot Effect (and how to overcome it). Check out the original article here. All of these seemingly small purchases really do add up over time, and if you aren’t careful, they can add up quickly. And sadly, I used my credit card to purchase most of the pricier items. I only regret impulse buys and I’ll be more mindful of my purchases in the future.

7. Died and Came Back to Life

Drafted since: May 2019

I’m providing some context as I didn’t write a blog post entry. On November 17, 2018, I was playing Persona 5 when an unexpected event occurred. After dedicating 100 hours of gameplay, one wrong move reset the entire game, causing me to panic. This is a cautionary tale about the importance of maintaining multiple save files, as unexpected events can occur, leading to a major shock. I recall exactly where my character was when he was killed and the game restarted from the beginning. Fortunately, I was able to recover my last save file from before that point in the game. I had to backtrack a bit, which was frustrating and cost me an hour or two, but at least I didn’t have to start from scratch. The game nearly gave me a heart attack.

8. Could My Cat Be Morgana?

Drafted since: May 2019

Okay, this was a really dumb blog post idea. I was thinking up ways my cat, Timon, was similar to Morgana the cat from Persona 5. At the time, I was playing this game nonstop for a month so it’s all I thought about. I was in a deep depression after failing a clinical rotation, which set me back a year in nursing school. With nothing to occupy my time, I turned to gaming. It was my husband’s suggestion actually. And well, it did help me take my mind off of things.

Give Timon a yellow collar and this cat could cosplay as Morgana.

9. Managing the Dreaded Spam Folder on WordPress

Drafted since: June 2022

How to control spammy comments

1. Manage your settings. Automatically approve non-spammy comments by approving everyone’s first comment they ever make. One of my pet peeves if having every single comment of mine approved on someone’s blog. There is no reason for this, if you know I am a regular follower.

2. Check your spam folder often. Check your spam folder once or twice a week from a desktop; Sometimes, an innocent comment will end up in the spam folder so it’s important to check EVERY comment. Think this is too much of a hassle? You may be missing out on future followers, especially if you’re already implementing suggestion 1.

3. Disable comments on older posts. I haven’t done this yet but I am about to. There is no reason to reply to 2-year-old comments. Sometimes, I will but its starting to become a hassle navigating through old posts because I have an obligation to reply to comments.

4. Only registered users can leave comments. Users must be registered and logged in to comment (can be found under settings) Why is this important? I noticed that the majority of the spam was generated by private emails linked to third party websites. By removing the option for anyone to comment, unless they are a WordPress user, I cut down on 95% of the spam.

10. Quarantine Style

Drafted since: June 2020

The problem is that I never actually got around to writing up a blog post because the topic was so boring. The list was something like this: Allow natural sunlight in, stick to a schedule, take breaks, establish a morning routine, leave the house, create a daily to-do list, etc. Nothing I had to say was original or captivating. However, I must admit, the title was ingenious. By the time I considered turning this into a blog post, quarantine had ended.

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ CONCLUSION ♥

That concludes this blog post! I tried to dig up old photos and couldn’t really find the ones I wanted. Still, I’m glad that I was finally able to put this blog post together in a way that hopefully makes sense. Now you’ve seen another layer of weirdness in me that you didn’t know existed.

“Spot the Gnome” Game

Who might enjoy this game, you ask? Well, it’s perfect for anyone who frequents stores that stock those quirky little gnomes. And let me tell you, Dollarama is just brimming with gnomes! Personally, I’ve been having an absolute blast with it. Oh, and just a heads up – Dollarama stores are exclusive to Canada 🍁But it’s not just limited to Dollarama. I have found the cutest gnomes at other stores in Canada like The Real Canadian Superstore, for example. #OhCanada

I started this whole thing to network with people on Twitter/𝕏 and it has evolved into something bigger. My goal is to keep the momentum going on social media, whether it’s Twitter/𝕏 or another platform. If you’re not on Twitter, that’s okay. Why should you play this game? Well, apart from me telling you to (just kidding!), it’s fun! Also, there’s no obligation to make any purchases. As someone who is uninterested in buying more stuff to clutter up my home with, I take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but tweets/posts. Eventually, I would like to get a gnome for my garden. 🍄🌱

Aren’t these gnomes adorable? 🩷

Rules of the Gnome Game

Just like the title suggests, it’s basically a fun scavenger hunt for gnomes. Your mission is to spot as many gnomes as possible, especially the unique ones, snap a pic of them, and make sure to tag me and your friends in your post. Feel free to tag all your fellow gnome lovers too!

At the end of the day, I chose gnomes because there are plenty of quirky types out there. Allow me to introduce you to the gnomes I’ve come across so far:

I’m interested in finding out about the types of gnomes that you’ve come across in your country. Let me know if you’ve spotted any quirky or unique ones. Happy gnoming!
