She Was Never One of Us

Oh, Canada! 🇨🇦 I have lived in Canada my entire life; I was born and raised here. Canadians are often recognized for their friendly and apologetic nature. On a personal level, I have come to realize that I possess these traits, often giving people numerous opportunities and extending my trust to them. As you may have noticed from the title, I am throwing some maple leaf shade here. I won’t give you much context for privacy reasons, but publishing this poem on January 4th was intentional. If you like this poem, feel free to check out my other poetry musings here. ✨

Thanks for reading! ♡

As a Michigander I’ve had Canadian friends my whole life, so the stereotype never clicked with me since my Canadian friends were silly maroons just like me haha.

Also my friends from Edmonton really hated native Americans. 🤪

Haha silly maroons 😂 I live in Calgary which is sorta close-ish to Edmonton. I guess it depends on who you ask. Some of the nicest people I know are American.

Really enjoyed the poem. Canadians are really friendly from my experience and thankfully I had such lovely experiences with everyone I met. However, remember to not give people too many opportunities when they don’t deserve it. You need to set strong boundaries even when it’s hard to do in order to protect yourself.

Thank you for reading the poem, Pooja! I plan on uploading the rest of the WIP poems that have been sitting in my drafts folder.

I am naïve and like to believe kind people stay kind but this couldn’t be further from the truth. One second they are super sweet and nice. And the next they flip a switch and violate the friendship/severe it. I took psychology classes and realize that this has more to do with them than it has to do with us but I can’t help but take that shit personally *sigh*

Hence what inspired me to write this poem. ✍️

Thank you so much! 💖 I still need to upload more than half of my drafted poems in this format, which I plan to do sometime this year.

I ended up using Canva for the layout. I didn’t like that ppl could easily copy and paste poems in standard WP format, and I also didn’t like the lack of editing features in standard WP format. It really came down to the editing preferences and the need to personalize my poems a bit more than copy/paste.

I still use standard WP format for parodies. Whatever looks more aesthetically pleasing I end up using lol

As I’m not Canadian, I had to Google to see what might be relevant about the 4th of January, and the only thing I found was Ribbon Skirt Day, which fits with the title but less so with the last line, which seems like people have let you down in a big way. Whatever the reason for picking the 4th of January, it’s a great poem

Very interesting. I have never heard of Ribbon Skirt Day, but I learned something new. I chose January 4th because that’s her birthday. Only reason I picked it, just in case this particular person happened to be reading my blog, even though I know she probably wasn’t.
